CATALOGUE NOTE
In Michiel Roscam Abbing’s monograph on Samuel van Hoogstraten (see Literature below), the present work is identified as a double portrait of Johan Cornelisz. Vijgeboom, a wealthy Dordrecht grocer and his wife Anneken Joosten Boogaert. Their manor house which had a substantial garden was near Dubbeldam which is the vicinity of Dordrecht. In the 1665 Estate inventory of Johan Cornelisz. Vijgeboom, mention is made of ‘Den schilderie van de hofstede onder Dubbeldam daer Jan Cornelis Vijgenboom ende Anneken Joosten Boogaert in geconterfeyt staan‘ (‘A painting of Johan Cornelis Vijgeboom and Anneken Joosten Boogaert with their Estate near Dubbeldam beyond’). Johannes Cornelisz. Vijgeboom, at the time of his death in 1665, was recorded as a Deacon of the Baptist community in Dordrecht, of which Samuel van Hoogstraten was also a registered member. Little is known of the biography of his wife Anneken Boogaert, she is listed as having died in 1650.
